Australian Open 2025: Djokovic’s Redemption and Sabalenka’s Quest for a Three-Peat

As the new year begins, the first major tennis tournament of the year kicks off tonight, the Australian Open. After a spectacular turnout last year, with Jannik Sinner winning his second title in the men’s singles and Aryna Sabalenka winning the tournament back-to-back years, there are some interesting storylines heading into the 2025 Open.

Can Djokovic Reclaim his Throne?

Apart from his victorious Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Novak Djokovic’s 2024 campaign was lackluster as he won ZERO of the four Grand Slam tournaments. This tournament is different however, as 3-time Grand Slam champion and British great, Andy Murray will be coaching him.Two guys will be on his mind throughout the tournament: Jannik Sinner, who won the tournament 12 months prior and has beaten Djokovic in their last three contests, and Carlos Alacarz: whom he recently defeated in the 2024 Olympic Finals. Can Djokovic make history and earn his 100th ATP singles championship AND his 25th Grand Slam Title?

Sabalenka Aims to Extend Her Reign

Aryna Sabalenka comes into the 2025 tournament as the No.1 ranked player in women’s singles. After dominating and winning titles in the Australian Open back to back years as well as the most recent US Open, the Belarusian looks to continue that streak and three-peat over the next couple weeks. She faces the likes of Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek, who has been the No.1 for the better part of the last three years, both looking to dethrone Sabalenka amid her dynasty run.
